RRTS Over Blue Line: Delhi's Ambitious Transit Project Hits New Heights

In a significant engineering feat, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has reached a major milestone in the construction of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor by successfully building a viaduct that crosses over the existing viaduct of the Delhi Metro's Blue Line corridor. This accomplishment marks a crucial step in the development of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor, which is set to revolutionize transportation in the region.


The RRTS corridor, designed to offer a semi-high-speed regional rail service known as 'RAPIDX,' is a collaborative effort between the central government and the governments of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. It is envisioned as a long-term solution to address Delhi's persistent challenges of pollution and traffic congestion.

The completion of the viaduct of the RRTS corridor crossing over the viaduct of the Delhi Metro's Blue Line corridor is a notable achievement. This junction is situated at an impressive height of approximately 20 meters, near the New Ashok Nagar metro station. Carrying out construction work at such an elevation above the already operational metro track is a testament to the engineering prowess involved in this project.

As the elevated alignment of the RRTS corridor intersects with the Blue Line of the Delhi Metro, it serves a substantial number of daily commuters. To ensure the convenience and safety of these travelers, the construction of this section of the viaduct was meticulously executed during nighttime hours. This was made possible through the use of 'Tarini,' a launching gantry, which lifted and assembled segments of girders to construct the full span of the viaduct.

Throughout this complex construction process, the NCRTC received unwavering support from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The construction was carried out seamlessly, with uninterrupted services of the metro, ensuring minimal disruption to commuters.

The RRTS project, spearheaded by NCRTC, adheres to the principle of multi-modal integration. To facilitate this, RRTS stations have been strategically planned to align closely with existing modes of public transport. This approach is aimed at providing commuters with seamless connectivity and an uninterrupted travel experience. The project has encountered numerous challenges related to construction and civil engineering, but innovative techniques and strategic planning have enabled its successful execution.

The New Ashok Nagar metro station, a bustling hub for commuters from Noida, is set to become an even more crucial transportation point. Once the RRTS corridor becomes operational, commuters will have the option to travel not only to Meerut but also to other RRTS corridors from this station. To facilitate connectivity between the RRTS station and the metro station, the NCRTC is constructing a foot-over bridge (FOB) that will be approximately 90 meters long and 6 meters wide, with a height of 8 meters.

The viaduct of the RRTS corridor, soaring at a height of about 20 meters above the Delhi Metro corridor, represents a significant engineering achievement. It signifies the progress being made in the development of the RRTS system, which is set to transform regional transportation, offering commuters a faster, more efficient, and eco-friendly mode of travel.

This milestone underscores the commitment of all stakeholders involved in the project to create a transportation network that addresses Delhi's growing mobility needs while promoting sustainability and convenience for its residents.
