The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Thursday approved capital acquisition proposals worth approximately Rs 7,800 crore.
The proposals include the procurement of an electronic warfare suite for Mi-17 V5 helicopters, light machine guns (LMGs), and Bridge Laying Tank (BLT).
The electronic warfare suite will be procured from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). It will enhance the survivability of the Mi-17 V5 helicopters in hostile environments.
The LMGs will be procured from the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB). They will replace the existing LMGs in service with the Indian Army.
The BLT will be procured from Larsen & Toubro. It will be used to lay bridges across water obstacles.
The DAC also approved the procurement of critical spares and components for the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). This will ensure the continued availability of the LCA for operational deployment.
The approvals are in line with the government's focus on ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India). They will boost the domestic defence industry and help in reducing India's dependence on imports.
The DAC is the highest decision-making body for procurement of defence equipment by the Ministry of Defence. It is chaired by the Defence Minister and meets regularly to approve proposals for the acquisition of defence equipment.
The proposals approved by the DAC on Thursday are a significant step towards strengthening India's defence capabilities. They will also help in creating jobs and stimulating the economy.
The government has been taking several steps to promote self-reliance in the defence sector. In recent years, it has increased the budget for defence research and development. It has also encouraged the private sector to participate in defence manufacturing.
The approvals by the DAC are a further boost to these efforts. They will help in creating a vibrant defence industry in India and make the country self-reliant in defence production.
Here are some additional points:

- The procurement of the LMGs will help to replace the aging inventory of LMGs in service with the Indian Army. The OFB is a state-owned defence manufacturing company.
- The procurement of the BLT will help to improve the Indian Army's capability to lay bridges across water obstacles. Larsen & Toubro is a leading engineering and construction company in India.
- The procurement of critical spares and components for the Tejas LCA is essential to ensure the continued availability of the aircraft for operational deployment. The LCA is a light combat aircraft developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in India.
